Mat.Joe is a DJ duo based out of Germany, who produce and play their own brand of music: Crispy Urban House. Taking hard hitting house beats and skillful adding in elements from soul, and hip-hop, the duo have created a genre defining sound that pushes the boundaries of modern music. We sat down and talked to them about things ranging from who inspires them all the way to living in space.
At what point in your career as a Artists, did you realize that you were “All In”?
When we both quit our jobs and our studying and got our first cash for shows. That’s when we intuitively knew it’s the “point of no return”. We always thought hope that point would arrive, but we are still to this day so happy and grateful to be able to make a living out of doing something we love and are passionate about.
What type of music did you listen to growing up?
A lot of different genres: Funk, Soul, Hip Hop, Punk, Hardcore, RnB. Artists like Jamiroquai, Sly Johnson, Bobby Womack, Lauryn Hill, Wu-Tang, NOFX, Eightball, Brightside, Sick Of It All, Pharrell, Aaliyah, J Dilla, Jeru The Damaja, Masta Ace, Gangstarr, Rasco, Planet Asia. Should we go on??
If you could remix one of those artists music, and open for them, who would it be?
Pharrell or Wu-Tang Clan would be pretty sick. They inspire us everyday and we would be most grateful to open a show for them. Got a lot of respect for these guys. And Nickelback, of course.
What is your ideal set length, and what’s the longest set you’ve played?
It really depends on the event, usually two hours but sometimes three or four if the vibe is right. We played around 8 hours at Lost Beach Club in Montañita, Ecuador and loved every minute of it. If everything comes together in the right way, we’d go on forever.
What’s the best sound system you’ve ever heard?
Lost Beach Club, Montañita, Geisha Bar, Perth, D-Edge, São Paul, and of course Berghain. All different of course, but equally amazing. It’s such a shame that every club doesn’t put the sound system at the top of its list. It definitely should be.
Where’s the best sound system you’ve ever played on?
Both Lost Beach Club and Geisha Bar are incredible. Warm yet crystal clear.: pretty much the perfect combination.
Can you describe how your style music sounds? (For context, it’s 3AM, and you are playing a warm open air venue, with an amazing sound system and there’s 1500 people who are huge fans of yours)
Wow, sounds like a decent setting! Well, we like to call it “CrispyUrbanHouse”. It would for sure contain our tracks but also a variety of different styles. It’s all about reading the crowd, especially at cozy open air venues. You never know where the journey goes. When the sun rises some hours later, literally anything can happen.
What’s the most memorable set you’ve heard in the last few months?
Jamie Jones at DC-10. His set really captures the spirit of this place, especially at a Paradise party. We were lucky to be there just one week before it was recorded. Bangin!
If you could go to space and return, how long would you stay for, who would you bring, and where would you go?
We would stay forever, take all our beloved ones and go to Venus!
